Working for the future
As a next generation BioPharma leader, to make a difference to the lives of
patients fighting serious disease, we know that we have to maintain a strong,
healthy and vibrant pipeline
The research and development process is a long and
expensive one; it may take an investment of $1 billion
and 10 years or more for a drug to advance from
bench top to bedside.
Bristol-Myers Squibb’s aim is to deliver a steady
stream of innovative new medicines. We invest
$3.5 billion in research and development annually.
From an industry standard of 50 percent in 2000,
80 percent of our potential medicines enter
clinical trials.
One of the most exciting areas of drug development
for us is oncology. Our hope is that the next few
years will yield the fruits of decades of cancer
research, with new classes of medicine being created
that are able to fight aggressive and previously drugresistant
tumours.
Another interesting area of recent investment is our
rapidly developing biologics capability. This new
generation of medicines consists of large-molecule
proteins that are engineered from biological sources
rather than chemically synthesised.
This field of research is becoming more important for
better targeting of diseases and as scientists apply
new understanding of disease processes to
increasingly tailored treatments.
