SECURE THE FUTURE®
Almost two-thirds of the 39.4 million people estimated to be infected with HIV and AIDS globally live in sub-Saharan Africa. In 1999, we set up the SECURE THE FUTURE® foundation to fight the spread of HIV and AIDS in this poverty-stricken region.

Bristol-Myers Squibb was the first corporation to respond on such a scale to this growing crisis and SECURE THE FUTURE® is still the largest corporate commitment of its kind. Since 1999, we have invested more than £66 million in over 200 different programmes in South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Namibia, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, the Ivory Coast and Uganda. The programme’s focus is care and support for women and children infected and affected by HIV and AIDS.

SECURE THE FUTURE® continues to expand. In partnership with the Baylor College of Medicine in United States, we plan to send 250 doctors to Africa by 2010 to treat approximately 80,000 children and to train local health care professionals. Four new children’s clinical centres of excellence will be built, adding to the three already funded under the programme.

In 2005, the Global Business Coalition on HIV and AIDS presented Bristol-Myers Squibb with its award for Business Excellence in the Community for SECURE THE FUTURE®.

Bristol-Myers Squibb Fellowship
The Bristol-Myers Squibb Fellowship was founded in 1984 to fund innovative cardiovascular research in the UK. The panel grants one or two awards each year to assist promising young doctors in the field of cardiovascular medicine. Successful candidates receive funding for two years, to cover research and attendance at international meetings and seminars. Since its inception, the panel has created more than 30 Fellows.

Women at Heart
Cardiovascular disease is the UK’s number one killer. Despite widespread perceptions that it is a 'male' illness, in fact, more women die of cardiovascular disease across Europe than all cancers put together. The Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation has formed a partnership with the European Society of Cardiology to back its 'Women at Heart' initiative. A grant of around £190,000 has been donated to help improve the awareness, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease in women in Europe. You can learn more about Women at Heart by visiting www.escardio.org/initiatives/womenheart.

One Vision
One Vision is a European photographic competition sponsored by Bristol-Myers Squibb to encourage new and positive ways of looking at the life of people with HIV and AIDS. Through this competition, Bristol-Myers Squibb also contributes essential funds to community HIV and AIDS groups, including UK organisations. Photographs from winners past and present can be viewed at www.onevision2006.org.

Access to HIV Medicines
In an effort to expand access to its HIV medicines in sub-Saharan Africa, Bristol-Myers Squibb announced a technology transfer agreement for Reyataz® (atazanavir), in 2006. Two generic companies were granted a voluntary license for the drug and were taught the manufacturing process. One company, Emcure Pharmaceuticals (India) has already manufactured a generic version of the product.
